The Havasu 95 Speedway, located in beautiful Lake Havasu City-Arizona, will present the latest round of their ongoing Winter Racing Series this Saturday night April 19th. Highlighting the racing action, at the most scenic quarter mile asphalt track in the southwest, will be a special appearance by the West Coast Pro Trucks along with the Vintage Sprints and Midgets. Local race fans will also get treated to action from the speedway's regular divisions from the ASA sanctioned Legend Cars, Bandoleros and Factory Stocks.
The West Coast Pro Trucks is a regional touring series for full sized racing trucks that totally redefines the term tail gate party. But something very interesting has been going on with this series lately and has raised the question who can beat Ricky James? The 19 year old driver has won the last two series races in a row in a very dominating fashion. The truly remarkable aspect of this feat lies in the fact that he drives his truck with hand controls because he's paralyzed from the sternum down. This condition was created back in the spring of 2005 when he suffered a horrible accident, while participating in a motocross race in Texas, that crushed his T7 vertebrae. The inspiration of watching him drive on the race track under conditions like that alone is worth the price of admission to Saturday night's race.
The speedway's Legend Car Division will be crowning a champion this Saturday night. Connor Kassik, on the strength of a very consistent three top five finishes along with four top tens, appears to be in pretty good shape to take this title. Kassik will go into Saturday night with a 42 point lead over second place driver Tim Gewecke who has two top five finishes and three top tens. The one thing keeping Gewecke from the top of the standings is a race he missed back on February 9th. Missed races has also hampered the championship efforts of Derek Frohlich who misssed events back October 6th as well as the Legend Car's most recent appearance at the Havasu 95 Speedway on April 5th. Frohlich has entered three Legend Car races and has won all three of them but the two events he's missed has left him 50 points away from the leader with only one more race left.
The youngsters in their small, but very fast, Bandolero cars will also be crowning a track champion Saturday night. Series points leader Tyler Fabozzi has been very consistent and has four wins and seven top fives so far this season. Despite that very good year he's only 20 points ahead of Alex Morgan who has won the last two feature races in a row and is expected to give the points leader a strong run for the title this Saturday night. Also still in the picture, in a possible spoiler role, are the team mates from Kelly Racing. Shelby Orozco and Tom Kelly are 26 and 30 points away from the leader and any mishaps by the two front runners could make this last race most interesting.
The always fun Factory Stocks will be expected to put on their usual fan pleasing racing is rubbing exhibition. With only three races left in their season, Dave Buntmeyer leads the series standings with 596 points and holds a 32 point lead over runner up Mike Harris. Scott Allen is third in the standings and only 36 points away from first.
The days of yester year will be presented at the Havasu 95 Speedway Saturday night with a visit from the Vintage Sprints and Midgets. Not only will the fans get to see these cars on the track but they will also get an up close and personal look at them during the pre race autograph session and the post race visit to the pit area. These cars and their drivers are truly a living history of the golden days of open wheel racing. The drivers love meeting with the fans and will only be too happy to answer questions about their cars.
Once again the Havasu 95 Speedway Special Events Staff has come up with another innovative idea to provide fan entertainment. This time it's Beach Blanket Bingo Night. The first 200 to yell bingo during the evening will receive cash and special prizes. Fans who wear beach attire to the race track Saturday night will receive a $2 discount off of the price of a general admission or senior ticket.
Tickets are $12 general admission and $10 for seniors, military and the handicapped. Kids prices are $6 for ages 6 to 16 while kids five and under are admitted free but must be accompanied by an adult. Race time is 7 pm.
